For the Make Visual Novel Assets jam this year (https://itch.io/jam/mvna2026) I’m planning to release code for improved particle effects in Ren’Py. These are for things like falling snow, rain, fireflies, dust particles, fire sparks, falling leaves, etc.
As part of this pack, I would like to also include some creative commons (CC0 or CC-BY) particle images so users can get going right away with the effects. In particular, I am looking for small (max 300×300 px, or if larger, readable when scaled down) illustrations. These assets will be included with the code as a zip file hosted on my itch.io https://feniksdev.itch.io.
Need-to-have:
- Snowflakes and snow “puffs”
- Short (3-8 frame) animations of a raindrop hitting various surfaces (wet and dry – see included gifs and example spritesheet)
- A few different leaf images (head-on, curved, missing chunks, various leaf types, etc.)

Nice-to-have but not required:
- A short (3-10 frame) animation of a leaf twisting/curling (see included gifs – does not need to be as long, or move downwards, but it should cleanly loop)
- Cherry blossom petal images
- Any other particles that would be suitable for the tool

The art style is flexible, but ideally the illustrations should be suitable for most project art styles. Painterly and cel-shaded styles are very common for VNs so the art should blend with both or more than one image style should be provided. Multiple artists are welcome to submit images for this tool, so it isn’t a problem if you’re only able to do one or two of the needed illustrations or only in a particular style. The more variety the better!
Deadline: I’d like to have these assets available for the MVNA deadline, which is February 14. However, I’m also happy to release the code for the jam (as the code is near-complete) and include the assets later if the timing is too rushed. Latest deadline is end of March.
Payment: This is a volunteer position, and the tool will be released for free on my itch.io without the option of payment. However, I’m happy to offer a key to whichever of my paid tools you like per accepted illustration (https://feniksdev.itch.io/). MVNA does have a reward for the highest voted submission, but if this tool wins, the prize money will be passed on to the next winner so as not to worry about splitting money. This is a tool by the community and for the community to improve all projects!
Credit: Credit can be required as part of the license using CC-BY to allow creators to use them freely in commercial and non-commercial projects. You will also be credited however you request on the itch.io page.
Contact: Message me using the form below and tell me which asset(s) you can provide and when you can complete the work by. Let me know if you have any questions about the requirements as well. Thank you for your interest!
