Floating Point Number

« Back to Glossary Index

Usually shortened to “float”. Any number that has decimal places e.g. 2.0, 3.14159, -43.982, 0.00005

Named for the fact that the decimal point can “float” anywhere in the number, since there isn’t a fixed number of digits before or after the decimal point (e.g. 100.05 has the decimal point after the third number, but 4.9543 has it after the first number, even though both have 5 digits).
